CEBU CITY – Mayor Edgardo Labella announced on Tuesday that Cebu City is included in the Malacañang proclamation declaring Dec. 4, 2020 as a special non-working holiday to mark the birth anniversary of the late senator, Cebu governor and city mayor Sergio Osmeña Jr.

"The Cebu City government is officially declaring this Dec. 4, 2020, Friday, as a holiday in commemoration of the late former senator and Cebu governor Sergio Osmeña Jr. and his very important contributions to the development of Cebu City as mayor from 1959 to 1963," Labella said in a press conference.

Earlier, Palace declared Dec. 4, 2020 a special non-working day in Cebu Province in honor of the 104th birth anniversary of the late senator.

Cebu City is an independent city from the province.

Labella noted Osmeña's stint as mayor of Cebu City for several terms, which makes it only fitting to give him honor and recognition.

Labella said this would be in honor of Osmeña who gave significant contributions to the city’s economy and infrastructure.

President Rodrigo Duterte set the special non-working day through his Proclamation No. 1053, signed on Nov. 18.

Osmeña Jr. served as governor of Cebu Province from 1951 to 1959; as mayor of Cebu City from 1959 to 1963; and as senator from 1965 to 1971.

“It is but fitting and proper that the people of the Province Cebu be given full opportunity to celebrate and participate in the occasion with appropriate ceremonies, subject to community quarantine, social distancing and other public health measures,” Duterte said. (PNA)
