CAMP DANGWA, La Trinidad, Benguet – They could be superheroes fighting the bad guys but now are garbed in silky clothing with capes on the shoulders. They are ordinary men in blue shirts who extend help to the needy. They are our policemen doing their duties with a heart.
Aside from giving human resource and logistical support, the Police Regional Office Cordillera (PROCOR) also shared their blessings in terms of cash to victims of calamities, coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic, and in support to a good cause.
The PROCOR has raised a total of PHP19.2 million from the individual voluntary donation of policemen assigned in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) for these humanitarian programs.
Capt. Marnie Abellanida, chief information officer of the PROCOR, said that from the total amount, some PHP3,407,875 is for the victims of the recent typhoons in Region 2 and Bicol Region.
He said the PHP2.04 million cheque was personally handed by PROCOR Regional Director, BGen. R’Win Pagkalinawan, to PRO-2 Deputy Regional Director for administration BGen. Edgar Cacayan on Thursday in a simple activity in Kalinga province. The PHP1.37 million will be turned-over to PRO-5 in the coming days.
“It is the Cordillera’s financial assistance to the counterpart in regions greatly affected by the recent typhoons,” the official said.
He said PHP535,910 came from Abra Police Provincial Office; PHP157,200 from Apayao police; PHP509,400 from Baguio City Police Office; PHP532,500 from Benguet; PHP320,000 from Ifugao; PHP405,900 from Kalinga; and PHP283,000 from Mountain Province.
Regional Mobile Force Battalion (RMFB) also pitched in PHP297,500 while personnel from the regional headquarter also contributed a total of PHP249,855 while the Regional Support Units also gave a total of PHP116,410.
Continuing help
Policemen nationwide did the same at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic under the program “Kapwa Ko, Sagot Ko” which was an initiative of former PNP chief General Archie Gamboa.
With several people financially suffering from the effects of Covid-19, the different police units in the country identified poor families whom they helped by providing basic needs.
Abellanida said some who were unable to provide for themselves until now are still being helped.
“Binabalik-balikan pa rin natin sila (we still visit them [the families]),” he said
“Kapag nakakakita tayo ng mga pamilya na sobrang nangangailangan, tinutulungan pa rin sila under this program (when we find families who need help, we still extend help under the program),” the police captain added.
While still a continuing project, the “Kapwa ko, Sagot ko” program has already raised PHP11.7 million.
Abellanida mentioned that they have also raised PHP4.1 million to fund the construction of a footbridge in Sadanga, Mountain Province.
“The footbridge challenge is in support to the local government that also continues to help drum up the national government’s anti-insurgency program,” he said.
The footbridge will allow people to easily bring their produce nearer to the road and the market. It is hoped that more will contribute to the construction of the footbridge so that it can be elevated to a concrete bridge that will allow vehicles to pass.
He said the “Bayanihan Fund Challenge” has been a way for the PNP to selflessly share and provide help and support to those who are in need and to advance a good cause. (PNA)
