MANILA – A Catholic prelate on Tuesday urged Filipinos, particularly the youth, to register to be able to participate in the May 2022 national and local elections.

“Our message is that everyone should be registered especially the youth and those who have not voted twice so that they can vote and that they can be counted,” Manila Apostolic Administrator Bishop Broderick Pabillo said in an article posted on the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) news website.

At the same time, the Manila auxiliary bishop asked voters to scrutinize those who will be running in next year’s elections.

“They (voters) should be discerning. It is good that names are starting to arise, they should start their research on them Who are these people? What have they accomplished? What can they contribute to the country? As early as now, people should be talking about it,” Pabillo added.

He reminded that voters should register now since the Sept. 30, 2021 deadline set by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) will no longer be extended.

Over the weekend, the Comelec released the calendar of activities for the May 9, 2022 elections.

The poll body set the filing of certificates of candidacy from Oct. 1 to 8, including Saturdays and Sundays.

The campaign period for candidates for president, vice president, senators, and party-lists will be from Feb. 8 until May 7, 2022.

On the other hand, the campaign period for candidates for congressmen and elective local officials is from March 25 to May 7, 2022. (PNA)
