MANILA – A total of 133 tuning units have been replaced along the mainline of the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) as part of the comprehensive rehabilitation of the rail line.

In a Facebook post on Friday, the MRT-3 said tuning units are part of a track circuit, an electrical system that detects the presence of trains in a specific track.

“Mahalaga ito para sa maayos na signalling system, upang magarantiya kung ligtas nang patakbuhin ang isang tren sa railway track (This is important for a proper signaling system, it is to guarantee the safety of train operations in the railways),” the MRT-3 said.

About 31 tuning units were replaced at the North Avenue Station, eight units at Quezon Avenue Station, 10 units at GMA-Kamuning Station, 13 units at Cubao Station, 12 units at Ortigas Station, 28 units at Shaw Boulevard Station, eight units at Boni Avenue Station, 11 units at Guadalupe Station, and 12 units at Buendia Station.

The tuning unit replacements were completed with the help of MRT-3's maintenance provider, Japanese contractor Sumitomo-Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, in its comprehensive rehabilitation.

Earlier, the MRT-3 touted its nine newly overhauled light rail vehicles (LRVs) that were added to its train operations.

These LRVs help increase the number of operational train cars and passenger capacity. (PNA)
