MANILA – The Bureau of Customs (BOC) has earned close to PHP140 million in revenues from the disposal of nearly 600 overstaying cargoes nationwide for the first quarter of 2021.
According to the latest data released on Wednesday, the bureau’s Assessment and Operations Coordinating Group (AOCG), together with the Auction and Cargo Disposal Division (ACDD) and units of all collection districts in the country, disposed of a total of 586 overstaying containers through various modes of disposition, such as auction, condemnation, and donation.
The bureau has collected an aggregate value of PHP138,535,866 from a public auction of 354 overstaying containers of assorted items such as rice and galvanized steel, among others.
The BOC also condemned 232 containers in the first three months of the year.
It added that the overstaying containers are either abandoned or seized under Sections 1139 and 1141 of the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (CMTA), which provides for the conditions and modes of disposition of these items.
Also in relation to Customs Administrative Order 17-2019, cargoes that were not withdrawn within the regulatory period of 30 calendar days from payment of duties, taxes, and other charges shall be deemed abandoned, unless covered by duly issued alert order, and upon the finality of the Decree of Abandonment, the bureau shall then determine the proper disposition among auction, condemnation or donation.
“Significantly, these disposition activities are aimed at efficiently facilitating trade by eliminating port and yard congestion, thereby ensuring smooth flow of business within the agency,” Customs Commissioner Rey Leonardo Guerrero said in a statement. (PNA)
