SAN JOSE DE BUENAVISTA, Antique – The implementation of the "courtesy lockdown" in Antique went smoothly as the locals showed their support to the measure to curb the rising cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) in the province.

The acceptance and compliance of the residents were noted as the Antique Provincial Health Office recorded 50 new confirmed cases increasing the total active cases of the province to 229 as of Wednesday.

The new cases brought to 383 the total cumulative cases, with 146 recoveries and eight deaths.

It was the second day that the province reported 50 new infections.

Antique Provincial Police Office (APPO) information officer Executive Master Sergeant Rossinni Mena, in an interview, said since the chiefs of police (COPs) in the 18 municipalities of the province established their checkpoints for the courtesy lockdown beginning April 5-19, they did not encounter any indignant reactions from the public.

“The people were cooperative with the municipal police personnel,” she said.

She added that the checkpoints or the Quarantine Control Point and Control Border Point (CBP) were activated as people are discouraged to go out from their respective municipalities for 15 days to prevent the further spread of the Covid-19 cases in the province.

The public is encouraged to stay in their homes if they have nothing important to transact outside, she said.

“I am urging everyone especially the parents to closely monitor your children that they will not roam around in the streets,” Mena said.

She added that the implementation of the courtesy lockdown also came with the imposition of the liquor ban and "we have not yet received any report of liquor ban violation since April 5."

San Remigio Mayor Margarito Mission Jr., in a separate interview, said his constituents support the courtesy lockdown as he supervised the checkpoint on the border of Sibalom and San Remigio during the first day of its implementation on April 5.

San Remigio, a tourist destination for its cold climate, strawberries, and eco-farms, has been closed to visitors since March 23 to stem the spread of the Covid virus.

The municipality has eight Covid-19 active cases.

“Two of our Covid-19 confirmed cases are confined at the Angel Salazar Memorial General Hospital while one is admitted in Iloilo City,” Mission said.

He said that the five others are under home quarantine. (PNA)
