LOS BAÑOS, Laguna – Talisay won the inaugural game of the Pilipinas VisMin Super Cup in style, routing Tubigon 104-66 at the Alcantara Civic Center here Friday night.
The Aquastars set up the blowout with a 10-2 run late in the first quarter that opened a 28-16 cushion and never looked back.
They shot 50 percent from the field and made 29 of 41 field goals while committing just nine turnovers.
"’Yung opensa namin, naging maayos kasi maganda ang depensa namin (Our offense was fluid because we played good defense)," Talisay coach Aldrin Morante said.
Patrick Cabahug led Talisay with 22 points on 9-of-16 shooting off the bench while Jan Jamon added 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting and six rebounds.
Paolo Hubalde scored the league's first basket with a layup in the 9:20 mark of the first quarter.
He played for only six and a half minutes and had four points as the starters played solid basketball to score the rout.
Pari Llagas led the Tubigon Mariners with 19 points on 9-of-13 shooting, six rebounds, four assists, and three blocks.
"Maraming lapses sa defense. Sa first period, marami silang fastbreak points and ‘yung big men nila nakaka-score sa low post (There were many lapses in defense. In the first period, they had many fastbreak points and their big men got to score on the low post)," Morante said.
He expressed hope that Talisay would improve on its defense on Tuesday when they battle Mandaue, which was taking on Siquijor as of posting time.
