MANILA – In spite of the ongoing dry season, Angat, San Roque, Pantabangan and Magat dams in Luzon can still supply water for their respective customers until June 2021.
Water level by end of May will likely remain above the dams' corresponding low water elevations so the possibility for water shortage in these facilities is nil, noted Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) hydrologist Sonia Serrano.
"Those dams can still serve customers this June," she said.
PAGASA forecast above-normal rainfall this May over watersheds where the dams are, boosting these facilities' potential to supply water.
Citing PAGASA's latest available outlook, Serrano said expected end-May 2021 water levels in Angat, San Roque, Pantabangan and Magat dams are 189.51 meters, 251.00 meters, 196.98 meters and 193 meters, respectively.
The dams' corresponding low water elevations are 180 meters, 225 meters, 177 meters and 160 meters, respectively.
"That indicates the dams by May 2021's end have water to supply this June," she said.
Last month, PAGASA announced the start of dry and warm weather in the country due to the termination of the northeast monsoon or "amihan".
Such weather can last till May, noted PAGASA weather forecaster Grace Castañeda.
The 2021 rainy season's onset may occur between early to mid-June, she added. (PNA)
