MANILA – Five barangays (villages) in Palawan's capital city Puerto Princesa have been put under a localized lockdown starting Friday due to a surge in coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).

In a letter by Wilhelm Suyko, chairperson of Mimaropa's Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) to Puerto Princesa Mayor Lucilo Bayron, a copy of which was obtained by the Philippine News Agency (PNA) on Thursday night, the villages of San Miguel, San Pedro, San Manuel, San Jose, and Sta. Monica will be under lockdown until April 30.

This came following an increase in Covid-19 cases among residents of Eliseo Tumbaga and Santol streets in Barangay San Jose.

According to the Wednesday bulletin of the Puerto Princesa City Information Office (CIO), a 31-year-old woman living in Tumbaga Street tested positive for Covid-19 and has been admitted to an undisclosed private hospital.

Two more Covid-19 cases have been confirmed in the said city, which are both female residents of Barangay San Pedro. The said patients are currently admitted at the Ospital ng Palawan.

As of Thursday night, data from the CIO showed Puerto Princesa has 50 active Covid-19 cases, from just 33 on Wednesday night.

This brought the number of Covid-19 cases in the city to 292, with 236 recoveries and eight deaths. (PNA)
