MANILA – There is nothing wrong with President Rodrigo Duterte using profanities, Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo said on Wednesday.

It is only normal for Duterte to curse, especially when he is angry over the unabated activities of corrupt government personnel, drug offenders, and criminals, Panelo said during his commentary show “Counterpoint.”

“Bakit naman hindi magmumura si Presidente, ang daming mga siraulong politiko, ang daming sabi niya magnanakaw na politiko, ang daming magnanakaw ng pera ng bayan. Maraming mga nagtutulak ng droga. Maraming kriminal. Eh magagalit talaga. Magmumura talaga iyan (The President curses because there are many stupid and corrupt politicians, drug personalities, and criminals. He will surely get mad. He will surely curse),” Panelo said.

Duterte has reminded his Cabinet that they cannot use profanities in diplomatic affairs and only him can utter expletives, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said on Tuesday.

Roque issued the statement after Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. told China to “get the f*** out" of the West Philippine Sea.

Locsin already apologized to China’s Foreign Minister and State Councilor Wang Yi for his harsh statement against China.

Duterte, Panelo said, is cursing because he is just being real.

“Walang kabahid-bahid na balatkayo kasi itong taong ito eh. Kaya ito minamahal niyayakap ng taumbayan (This man is not disguising. That’s why our countrymen love him),” he said. “Kita niyo naman, ‘pag galit siya, nagmumura siya (You see, when he is angry, he curses).”

Panelo added that it is more unacceptable if the country’s president is “decent and kind” but could not handle the problems in the country.

“Eh anong gusto nila? ‘Yung disente, mabait pagkatapos ang gulo ng bayan natin? Nandiyan ang droga. Nandiyan ang mga kriminal. Nandiyan ang nakawan. Iyan ba ang gusto nila? Ah, hindi. Dito kami kay Presidente Duterte (What do they want? Decent and kind president but the country is chaotic? There is drugs. There are criminals. Is that what they want? No, that’s not what we want. We want President Duterte),” Panelo said.

Despite Duterte’s use of profanities, many Filipinos still love the Chief Executive because of his accomplishments, Panelo said.

Panelo said Filipinos see Duterte as a good leader because of his “courage, intelligence, and being tactician.”

“‘Yung masa, nakikita nila ang sarili nila kay Presidente Duterte at si Presidente Duterte naman, nakikita niya ang sarili niya sa kanila (The people see themselves in President Duterte and President Duterte can see himself in them),” he said. (PNA)
