DAVAO CITY – Mayor Sara Z. Duterte said the discipline and sacrifices of the Dabawenyos during the pandemic are getting results as coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases in the city are currently on a downtrend.

Davao City records about 35 to 40 new cases per day, a significant decrease from 100 or more cases daily during the Covid-19 surge, according to the City Health Office.

The figures account for an average positivity rate of 3.8 percent, which is lower than the World Health Organization (WHO) threshold of 5 percent.

In a video message on Wednesday, Mayor Sara reminded the Dabawenyos not to be complacent with the low numbers as it can still be dangerous to everyone.

“We saw the decline of cases, and it is the result of our sacrifices and discipline. We must not waste this and let us not repeat the mistakes that we have done in the past including non-compliance of minimum health standards and neglecting the directives and the mandates aimed to contain the spread of the deadly Covid-19 in our homes and community,” she said.

Mayor Sara also stressed that no one wants to revert to an Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) because of its impact on the economy and the livelihood of the people.

However, she said an ECQ remains a possibility should Dabawenyos disregard basic health protocols, even by those who have already received the vaccines.

Mayor Sara explained that these are meant to lower the chances of death and the severity of symptoms of the person infected with Covid-19.

“Continue to wear your face mask, observe social distancing and avoid activities which involve mass gathering,” Duterte said.

The mayor also urged everyone to remember all Dabawenyos who have died of Covid-19, as well as the medical and non-medical front-liners sacrificing their lives every day to help fight against the virus.

Meanwhile, she also encouraged the Dabawenyos experiencing influenza-like illnesses and other respiratory illnesses to have themselves tested and consult infectious disease specialists to receive immediate care. (PNA)
