CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Five local government units (LGUs) in Misamis Oriental announced Friday the temporary closure of tourist spots to prevent a surge in coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) infections.

Officials of Jasaan, Lagonglong, Salay, Opol, and component city El Salvador decided to close the municipalities to tourists in the meantime.

Under Jasaan's executive order, Mayor Redentor Jardin prohibited the opening of beach resorts and gyms, as well as the holding of Zumba events.

Necrological services are limited to three days and should not exceed 30 visitors.

Salay Mayor Angelo Capistrano Jr.’s Executive Order (EO) 123 directed the police and municipal disaster risk reduction and management council to temporarily close floating cottages (balsa) in six coastal villages.

A similar closure of operation of resorts was made by Lagonglong Mayor Jay Alber Puertas with his EO 151 effective until June 2.

Public gatherings and celebrations that would invite large crowds are also prohibited, including Internet shops and Masses.

A curfew and liquor ban were likewise imposed.

“Please cooperate with the regulations of your respective LGUs,” Dr. Jerie Calingasan, head of the provincial inter-agency task force (IATF), said in a statement.

The regional IATF on Covid-19 reported on May 12 that an increase in positivity rate has been noted in Lanao del Norte (300 percent); Cagayan de Oro City (141.4 percent); Iligan City (123.5 percent); Misamis Occidental (59.4 percent); Misamis Oriental (25.7 percent); and Bukidnon (6.61 percent).
