TACLOBAN CITY – The Southern Leyte provincial government has placed its capital and three towns under stricter community quarantine status due to threats of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).

Pintuyan town was placed under modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) while the province’s capital of Maasin City and towns of Hinunangan and Liloan were placed under general community quarantine (GCQ) while the rest of the province is under modified GCQ.

“The concerned local governments are expected to impose zoning and containment strategy and are also reminded to ensure the strict implementation of the minimum health standard including the wearing of face masks, face shields, and physical distancing,” Governor Damian Mercado said in a statement on Monday.

Mercado issued an executive order on June 5 placing some areas under modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) based on a resolution approved by members of the regional inter-agency task force on June 4.

There are at least 60 confirmed Covid-19 cases with 45 recoveries and 15 active cases in Pintuyan town as of June 5. Maasin City, on the other hand, has 628 cases, including 515 recoveries and 16 deaths.

In Maasin, the city government has mandated employees at the city hall to undergo rapid antigen tests as part of the measures to know who is infected to prevent the spread of the virus.
