ZAMBOANGA CITY – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has delisted some 50,000 voters in this southern port city, an official said on Monday.
Lawyer Stephen Roy Cañete, election officer of the city's first district, said the delisted voters were primarily those who failed to vote in the last two elections.
Cañete said this city has a total of 455,000 registered voters, both in his district and in the second district, but this decreased to 405,000 with the removal of these names from the list of voters.
He said the first district has 192,000 registered voters while the second district has 213,000 voters.
The first district covers 37 of this city’s 98 barangays that are located at the west coast while the remaining 61 barangays at the east coast fall under the second district.
Voter registration activities are suspended after this city was placed under modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) effective May 8 amid the increase in cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).
The local Comelec office has adopted a work-from-home arrangement since its office is under lockdown due to the MECQ that is in effect until June 15. (PNA)
