DUMAGUETE CITY – Dengue cases in Negros Oriental have declined by 77 percent for the first six months this year as compared to the same period in 2020.

The latest report from the Regional Epidemiological Surveillance Unit (RESU) of the Department of Health (DOH) in Negros Oriental showed that 300 dengue cases were recorded from Jan. 1 to June 19, 2021.

This is 77 percent lower compared to the same period of last year with 1,288 cases and two deaths. There were also zero deaths from the disease this year.

The majority of the cases were from this capital city with 22.3 percent; Guihulngan City, 14.3 percent; Siaton, 11.3 percent; Tanjay City, 7.7 percent; and Bais City, 5.7 percent.

The top 10 cities and municipalities with the highest number of dengue cases are Dumaguete with 67; Guihulngan City, 43; Siaton, 34; Tanjay City, 23; Bais City and Sibulan, 17 each; La Libertad, 15; Bayawan City, 14; Sta. Catalina and Valencia, nine each, or a total of 248 cases.

The remaining 52 cases are distributed in the other towns and cities with less than 10 infections, although these were not identified in the RESU report.

Assistant Provincial Health Officer Dr. Liland Estacion, in a virtual presser Thursday, said the number of cases is not expected to spike this year, citing the trend that dengue cases in the province usually surge every two years.

Records at the RESU show that the last time Negros Oriental experienced an outbreak was in 2019 where 6,631 cases and 24 deaths were reported, while in 2020, the numbers dropped to 2,483 cases and five deaths. (PNA)
