ZAMBOANGA CITY – A total of 149 senior high school teachers here are facing termination for lack of qualification, an education official said Saturday.

These teachers were given provisional appointments when they were hired in 2016 and 2017, according to the Notice of Termination issued by the Department of Education’s (DepEd) central office, said Dr. Rosalio Conturno Jr., education supervisor for school governance and operations chief of the City Schools Division.

“These senior high school teachers were given five years moratorium to pass the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET). If they failed (or) did not take the exam, then they will be replaced if there are applicants who are LET passers,” Conturno said.

However, he said they would be automatically rehired for another school year in case no qualified teacher has been found to replace them.

Conturno said they were hired even though they were not LET passers since the DepEd needs teachers for senior high school when the K-12 curriculum was implemented.

He said the teachers facing termination for lack of qualification have been assigned to different senior high schools in this city.

Meanwhile, Conturno noted that the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) has not administered a licensure examination since the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) broke out last year. (PNA)
