ISTANBUL – Swiss tennis star Roger Federer qualified for the Wimbledon quarterfinals on Monday.

Federer defeated Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego in straight sets 7-5, 6-4, 6-2 in London.

Canadian player Felix Auger-Aliassime booked a place in his first Grand Slam quarterfinal after beating Alexander Zverev in five sets 6-4, 7-6, 3-6, 3-6, 6-4.

Also, a men’s singles match between Russia’s Daniil Medvedev and Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz was postponed due to heavy rain.

Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic defeated Christian Garin to also advance to the quarterfinals.

World number one Djokovic eliminated Garin from Chile 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 at London's Center Court.

Hungarian player Marton Fucsovics reached his first Grand Slam quarterfinals after defeating Andrey Rublev of Russia (6-3, 4-6, 4-6, 6-0, 6-3) in five sets.

He also became the first Hungarian to make the last eight at the tournament since Jozsef Asboth in 1948.

Denis Shapovalov beat Roberto Bautista 3-0, while Karen Khachanov defeated Sebastian Korda 3-2 to move to the last eight of the championships.

In the women's singles competition, Ajla Tomljanovic has reached her first Grand Slam quarterfinal after beating Emma Raducanu, who was forced to withdraw during the second set due to an injury.

The 2018 champ Angelique Kerber, Karolina Muchova and Viktorija Golubic also qualified for the quarterfinals.

World number one Ashleigh Barty also qualified for the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the first time with a 7-5, 6-3 win against Barbora Krejcikova.

Also, Karolina Pliskova defeated Ludmilla Samsonova 6-2, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals. (Anadolu)
