BALANGA CITY, Bataan – The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) reported on Wednesday that Typhoon Fabian left more than PHP44 million in total damage to agriculture in this province.

PDRRMO chief Josefina Timoteo said the incurred damage was on: rice -- PHP31.5 million, fisheries -- PHP11.2 million; high value crops -- PHP1.2 million; and corn -- PHP760,000.

Flash floods hit some barangays with mostly ankle-to-knee-deep water except Barangay Almacen in Hermosa where floodwaters rose up to four feet and Sitio Sunrise in San Juan, Samal, where the water rose five to six-foot deep.

Affected in Samal were some 85 persons who were transferred to the local school, and 98 individuals from Pilar and Balanga City who were preemptively evacuated.

Two major roads in the province -- the MacArthur Highway and Roman Highway -- were all passable during the height of the storm although some portions of the former went under one-foot deep water.

Timoteo said all concerned disaster and rescue agencies are on standby and in close monitoring for any eventuality on the effect of the southwest monsoon enhanced by "Fabian" which has been bringing intermittent moderate to heavy rains in the province.

She said the PDRRMO provides updates to concerned member agencies including the Metro Bataan Development Authority, Philippine National Police, Bureau of Fire Protection, Provincial Engineering Office, Department of Public Works and Highways, Provincial Health Office, Provincial General Services Office, the Peninsula Electric Cooperative, Department of Education and all local government units of the 11 towns and one city.
