ZAMBOANGA CITY – Two policemen, including a senior officer, were separately arrested for the delay and bungling with prosecution of drug cases, which is a violation of Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

Brig. Gen. Ronaldo Genaro Ylagan, Police Regional Office-9 (PRO-9) director, identified the arrested policemen as Corporal Junhavier Alam Ahmadul, 42; and Lt. Col. Nonito Asdai, 55.

Ylagan said Ahmadul was arrested at around 2:45 a.m. of Aug. 29 at the Zamboanga City Police Office’s (ZCPO) Station 1 in Barangay Vitali, where he is assigned.

Asdai was arrested at around 9 a.m. of Aug 28 in a subdivision in Barangay Mercedes here.

Both warrants of arrest against the two police respondents were issued by Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 35 Judge Shene Chiong Cañete.

The case against Asdai and Ahmadul stemmed from when they were still assigned at the Zamboanga City Police Office’s (ZCPO) Station 6.

Ylagan said both are charged with violation of Section 92 of R.A. 9165, which states that “any government officer or employee tasked with the prosecution of drug-related cases under this Act, who, through patent laxity, inexcusable neglect, unreasonable delay or deliberately causes the unsuccessful prosecution and/or dismissal of the said drug cases, shall suffer the penalty of imprisonment ranging from 12 years and one day to 20 years without prejudice to his/her prosecution under the pertinent provisions of the Revised Penal Code.”

A PHP200,000 bail was recommended for each respondent. (PNA)
