LEGAZPI CITY – Bicol region has recorded 645 new cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases in a day, the highest since the onset of the pandemic in March last year, the Department of Health (DOH) reported on Friday.

Dr. Aurora Deluro, DOH-Bicol chief epidemiologist, in a news briefing said data as of Sept. 16 showed the three provinces with the highest number of cases are Camarines Sur with 340, followed by Albay--98; and Sorsogon--78.

Bicol has been experiencing a significant surge in coronavirus cases with over 7,000 individuals getting infected in a span of 16 days, or an average of 370 cases per day, she noted.

With 7,712 active cases recorded so far this September, the region has logged a total of 31,275 cases since March 2020.

DOH-Bicol has also detected 134 cases of variants of concern, mostly in Camarines Sur, Albay and Masbate.

Owing to the continuing spike in cases, the Bicol Regional Training and Teaching Hospital (BRTTH) in Albay was converted into an exclusive Covid-19 facility effective Wednesday.

Dr. Eric Raymond Raborar, BRTTH medical center chief, said in a statement that critical and serious cases would be admitted while those with moderate and mild conditions would be referred to other public and private hospitals. (PNA)
