MANILA – The magnitude 5.7 earthquake that jolted Occidental Mindoro early Monday already generated 160 aftershocks, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported in the afternoon.

These aftershocks ranged from magnitudes 1.4 to 4.5, and two of these tremors were felt.

The tectonic quake struck 23 kilometers northeast of the municipality of Looc at around 1:12 a.m. Up to Intensity IV was felt in various areas, including in the provinces of Batangas, Cavite, Rizal, and Metro Manila.

A magnitude 4.5 aftershock struck 19 km. northeast of Looc at around 1:40 a.m. Intensity I was reported in Abra de Ilog, Occidental Mindoro.

In a TV interview, Phivolcs Director Renato Solidum, Jr. said it was a strong earthquake, thus many have felt it. "We expect aftershocks to reach magnitude 4.5 to 4.7," he said.

Since the origin of the earthquake is deep, it is not expected to cause damage, he added. The magnitude 5.7 earthquake had a depth of 76 kilometers.

"So far, we have not received a report that there were people who got hurt, or that there were damages due to the earthquake," Solidum said. (PNA)
