MANILA – The public will be informed of the details of 52 cases involving deaths during anti-illegal drug operations.

Department of Justice (DOJ) Undersecretary Neal Bainto said Tuesday the disclosure will assure the families and loved ones of the deceased that the suspects and the circumstances of each death are undergoing a determination of possible criminal liabilities on the part of police officers.

“Witnesses or persons with first-hand information helpful to the resolution of the 52 cases can come forward and approach the NBI (National Bureau of Investigation) for the taking of their statements," he said in a statement.

The DOJ had already concluded its review of alleged cases of extrajudicial killings (EJK) submitted by the Philippine National Police and its Internal Affairs Service.

The cases are to undergo further investigation and case buildup for the possible filing of criminal charges if warranted.

The DOJ authorized the release of an information table concerning details of the cases as part of the agency's recognition of the importance of transparency in its review process, balanced with the considerations of respecting due process.

DOJ Secretary Menardo Guevarra also assured the government will provide the results of its review and investigation.

“This matter is openly reported to the people as the process goes along," Guevarra said in a previous statement. (PNA)
