MANILA – The Department of Health (DOH) logged another record-high 39,004 daily coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) infections on Saturday but also tallied 23,613 new recoveries.
Active cases rose to 280,813 while total recoveries jumped to 2,834,708, or 89.5 percent of the 3,092,409 infections recorded since the pandemic started in March 2020.
Among the active cases, 267,185 are mild, 2,925 are moderate, 8,928 are asymptomatic, 1,472 are severe, and 303 are critical.
“Of the 39,004 reported cases today, 38,271 (98 percent) occurred within the recent 14 days – Jan. 2, 2021 to Jan. 15, 2022,” the DOH said.
The regions with the most cases in the past two weeks were the National Capital Region (NCR) with 18,142 or 47 percent of new infections; Calabarzon, 9,172 or 24 percent; and Central Luzon, 3,325 or 9 percent.
The death toll is now at 52,858 with the addition of 43 new fatalities, representing 1.72 percent of overall cases.
“Of the 43 deaths, 38 occurred in January 2022 (88 percent), one in October 2021 (2 percent), one in September 2021 (2 percent), one in August 2021 (2 percent), one in May 2021 (2 percent), and one in March 2021 (2 percent) due to the late encoding of death information to COVIDKaya,” the DOH stated.
According to January 11 data, about 47.1 percent of the 78,774 who were tested, have turned out positive for Covid-19.
“(A total of) 134 duplicates were removed from the total case count as 83 of these are recoveries. Also, three cases were found to have tested negative and have been removed from the final case count,” the department said.
Meanwhile, 10 cases previously tagged as recoveries were reclassified as deaths after validation.
All laboratories were operational on January 13 but eight were not able to submit their data to the Covid-19 Document Repository System.
The DOH said the 11 laboratories contribute, on average, 2.2 percent of samples tested, and 2.2 percent among positive individuals based on data in the past 14 days.
To date, 48 percent of 3,400 intensive care unit (ICU) beds, 48 percent of 20,300 isolation beds, 51 percent of 13,400 ward beds, and 22 percent of 3,000 ventilators are used by patients with Covid-19 nationwide.
Meanwhile, 55 percent of 1,100 ICU beds, 52 percent of 5,000 isolation beds, 69 percent of 4,200 ward beds, and 26 percent of 1,000 ventilators dedicated to patients with Covid-19 are in use in the NCR. (PNA)
