LINGAYEN, Pangasinan – The Pangasinan Police Provincial Office (PPPO) has urged candidates for local elective positions to surrender their firearms to their respective police stations for safekeeping amid the May national and local elections.

PPPO director, Col. Richmond Tadina, said the Ilocos Regional Police Office (PRO 1) has advised all the police provincial commands in the region to encourage all candidates in their areas to participate in the safekeeping of firearms.

Malaki ang magiging pasasalamat ng kapulisan kung makikiisa ang mga kandidato dahil makikita natin ang kanilang willingness sa pagnanais ng isang tahimik na halalan (The police will be very grateful if the candidates would participate because we would see their willingness to have a peaceful elections),” he said in an interview on Thursday.

During the campaign period until election day, Tadina said police officers are continuously conducting random checkpoints in line with the Commission on Elections’ (Comelec) gun ban.

He also reiterated that even licensed firearm holders are not allowed to carry their guns outside of their homes.

He added Pangasinan remains generally peaceful despite isolated shooting incidents that occurred in the province in the previous months. (PNA)
