CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY - The City of Malaybalay in Bukidnon is mourning the death of its local chief executive, Mayor Florencio Flores Jr., who passed away of Thursday. He was 72.

After succeeding Flores, former vice mayor and now Mayor Jay Warren Pabillaran on Friday issued his first Executive Order directing all government agencies in Malaybalay City and all barangay government units to fly their flags at half-mast in honor of the late mayor.

The order will take effect from Friday until Flores' internment as prescribed by Section 23 of the Republic Act 8491 or the “Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines.”

Flores' son, lawyer John Flores, confirmed his father's death in a post on Facebook on Friday.

"A life so fully lived deserves to be remembered. He was a public servant in the truest sense. He started as a community physician, offering help to those who needed it the most. He then spent 34 years of his life in tireless public service as a city councilor, vice mayor, congressman, and mayor of Malaybalay. He loved this city and its people — and even the last few days of his life were spent in service of Malaybalay," he said.

His other son, Brian, said their father was an exceptional leader, adventurer, and public servant who impacted their lives, especially the people of Malaybalay, whom he greatly loved.

"Dad, you've fought a good fight. Your kindness and generosity will forever be remembered. The world lost a wonderful person and we will never be the same without you in our lives," he said.

The late Flores is seeking reelection in the coming May 9, 2022 polls, with Pabillaran as his lone opponent.

His son, John, is also seeking a seat in the House of Representatives as 2nd District Representative. (PNA)
