DUMAGUETE CITY – Registrants to the Philippine Identification System (PhilSys) in Negros Oriental have reached more than 30,000 in just a month following a hiatus due to Typhoon Odette, an official of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) here said Wednesday.
Ariel Fortuito, chief statistics specialist and provincial director of PSA-Negros Oriental, said despite the onslaught of “Odette” last December in many northern areas, they are now picking up in their registration to the national identification program.
Fortuito said they were in Canlaon City on Tuesday to check on the PhilSys registration in the villages and to conduct a barangay civil registration.
“The Canlaon City local government unit invited us over for a barangay civil registration and we also attended the ‘Kasalan Ng Bayan’ so the married couples can register their marital union,” he said in mixed English and Cebuano.
The PSA is celebrating Civil Registration Month this February.
The PSA-Negros Oriental continues to bring the national ID registration to the barangays, Fortuito said.
As of February 22, the Step 2 registration output of the national ID program in the province has totaled 30,218 or 5.81 percent of the 520,300 target registrants this year, he noted.
The registration process resumed January 24 to give way to rehabilitation and recovery in the areas that were devastated by Typhoon Odette.
Signed into law by President Rodrigo R. Duterte in August 2018, Republic Act 11055, or the Philippine Identification System Act, aims to establish a single national ID for all Filipinos and resident aliens.
The national ID will be a valid proof of identity that shall be a means of simplifying public and private transactions, enrollment in schools, and the opening of bank accounts.
It will also boost efficiency, especially in dealing with government services where people will only need to present one ID during transactions. (PNA)
