MANILA – The Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) and the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) will offer free rides to female passengers on Tuesday in celebration of National Women’s Month.

In a Facebook post, the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA)—the operator and maintenance provider of the LRT-2—said the free rides and “special treats” will be offered to female passengers from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at all LRT-2 stations.

In partnership with the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Philippine Red Cross-Marikina and Manila chapters, the LRTA will also hold blood typing tests, blood pressure checking, and random blood sugar tests at Recto and Araneta Center-Cubao stations from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“These activities aim to honor and recognize the indispensable role of women in our society as well as reaffirm DOTR and LRTA’s commitment to gender equality and women empowerment,” LRTA chief Jeremy Regino said.

The LRTA, through its Gender and Development Committee, ensures the provision of gender-responsive rail services to the riding public through its projects, programs, and services such as holding trainings aimed to increase awareness of women employees on their rights.

On the other hand, the MRT-3 has also announced that free rides will be offered to female passengers on the same day, from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

In a Facebook post, MRT-3 OIC-General Manager Assistant Secretary Eymard Eje said the free rides are offered to show appreciation for the contribution of women in Philippine society.

“Kaisa po ng buong bansa ang pamunuan ng MRT-3 sa pagdiriwang at pagsaludo sa dedikasyon, galing, at puso ng bawat kababaihang Pilipino (The whole country and the MRT-3 are one at celebrating and saluting the dedication, ability, and heart of every Filipino woman),” Eje said.

With the theme, “We Make Change Work for Women,” the national women’s month will be celebrated for the entire month of March to highlight the gains and achievements of women, to assess action towards gender equality, and to continuously promote women empowerment. (PNA)
