MANILA – Partido Reporma senatorial candidate Guillermo Eleazar on Friday visited Leyte where he held dialogues with local officials and residents to present his platform of government which includes disaster management and response.

Eleazar said his agenda is appropriate considering that Tacloban City and other parts of Leyte were the hardest hit by Typhoon Yolanda in 2013.

“Right after the Yolanda devastation, we became blind on the extent of the damage to properties and human lives in Tacloban and other areas in Eastern Visayas due to lack of a stable communication line,” he said in a statement.

Eleazar said one of his priorities once he wins a Senate seat is the establishment of a reliable communication line in times of disasters and calamities.

He intends to provide satellite phones in every community which they can use when the main communication lines are downed by natural calamities.

Eleazar, a retired police general, is also pushing to inculcate disaster response and readiness measures in the curriculum of young learners.

Eleazar also pushed for the creation of permanent evacuation centers and the establishment of an insurance system for farmers affected by calamities.

Endorsement

Meanwhile, Eleazar's senatorial bid was further boosted by the recent expression of support from the Chinese-Filipino community.

This include Dr. Gigi Dy, a Filipino-Chinese dentist, who was abducted in Mandaluyong City in 2003 but was rescued by operatives of the defunct Police Anti-Crime Emergency Response (PACER) led by Eleazar, who was then a police superintendent.

Silverio Superable, one of the primary suspects and the Philippines’ third most wanted kidnapper at the time, was eventually arrested by law enforcers. The kidnap-for-ransom syndicate he headed was also dismantled and this led to the promotion of Eleazar to the next higher rank.

“To be honest, at that time, I did not think that I will be surviving my ordeal much less be rescued,” Dy said as she recalled her ordeal 19 years ago.

She added that she will really campaign and vote for Eleazar in the coming May elections.

Another relative of Dy, Meann Dy-Lim, also expressed support for Eleazar as she said it would be a “loss” to the Filipinos if the former police general “will not be elected in the Senate”.

“To my fellow Chinoys, I can guarantee that General Eleazar is a good person. He has a good heart and definitely, he is not corrupt. Let’s vote for him in the next elections this May as one of our senators,” she said in a mix of English and Chinese. (PNA)
