LEGAZPI CITY – The Department of Health in Bicol (DOH-5) on Monday reminded the public to continue following the health and safety practices against coronavirus disease (Covid-19) during the observance of Holy Week.

In a radio interview on Monday, Kenn Nuyda, DOH-5 Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (RESU) officer, said they want the people to spend Lent in a solemn, safe, and Covid-free way.

"Pagdating naman po sa celebration ng holy week, ito po ay patungkol sa pagpepenetensya di ba. Tayong mga Kristiyano still nagpa-practice pa rin ho ng mga religious beliefs (When it comes to the celebration of the Holy Week, this is about practicing penance. We, Christians, still practice our religious beliefs)," Nuyda said.

However, he cautioned devotees who self-flagellate as an act of penance on the possibility of tetanus and other bacterial infections that might be caused by open wounds.

"So kung titingnan po natin, as much as possible, sinabi na rin po ito ni Usec. (Rosario) Vergeire, sinasabi niya po doon kung as much as possible umiwas o i-avoid ang pagdalo o pag-join sa ganitong activity ngayon na may Covid-19 pa (So if we take a look, as much as possible, just like what Usec. Vergeire already mentioned, avoid attending or joining this activity especially now that there still Covid-19)," Nuyda said.

It is important to make sure that the materials to be used in self-flagellation are clean and free of rust, he added.

Nuyda also said if an accident happens and wounds are sustained, these must be properly cleaned and the person must get an anti-tetanus shot.

He said those who will participate in all Holy Week activities must wear a face mask properly, regularly sanitize hands and practice safe physical distancing.

"Covid-19 is here with us to stay kaya huwag po muna natin balewalain ang mga health protocols na nasimulan, simula po nung 2020 hanggang kasalukuyan (Covid-19 is here with us to stay, so let's not ignore the health protocols that we have been practicing since 2020 to date)," Nuyda said.
