ZAMBOANGA CITY – The Ministry of Health in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (MOH-BARMM) aims to vaccinate 25,500 people in Sulu in its ongoing three-day special vaccination drive against coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).
The campaign, dubbed Covid-19 Special Vaccination Days (SVD) in Sulu, kicked-off Wednesday and will end Friday.
Sulu Gov. Abdusakur Tan urged unvaccinated constituents Thursday to protect not only themselves but also their families and the whole community from contracting Covid-19.
Tan received his second vaccine booster shot during the kick-off ceremony.
“I, myself, was vaccinated with Sinovac two times, boosted once with Pfizer. I received my second Pfizer booster to show that this vaccine is safe and effective with a fatwa (Islamic ruling) from our Grand Mufti that it is halal (permissible), and moreover, it is free,” Tan said in a statement.
Other officials of the province also received vaccine boosters during the launching to signify their support for the immunization drive.
“The Jolo local government unit (LGU) always supports the initiatives of the national and regional governments in conducting both regular and special vaccination days because we know that it is for the welfare and protection of our people,” Jolo Mayor Kherkhar Tan said.
To reach the targeted unvaccinated individuals, the Sulu Integrated Provincial Health Office, and the LGU will be using the checkpoints, fixed posts (such as Barangay or Rural Health Stations), and the house-to-house methods.
In a report, the MOH-BARMM said a total of 3,341 people were immunized on the first day of the SVD, an initiative to increase the region’s low immunization coverage and achieve mass population immunity by June 30, 2022. (PNA)
