BACOLOD CITY – Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson urged Negrenses on Thursday to stay vigilant against the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) with the detection of Omicron subvariant BA.2.12.1 cases in Western Visayas and other parts of the country.

“We’ll have to observe how it goes. That variant has already been detected not only here in Western Visayas, but also other areas. But if you can notice also, the admission rates in hospitals are very low. Most likely these are very mild cases,” he said.

Lacson urged Negrenses to do their share in protecting themselves against the virus, adding that with the campaign period over, there is no reason for people to converge.

“It’s more of a behavioral concern. How do we treat Covid-19? Do we treat it lightly or do we take it seriously, and I hope that we still take it seriously and protect ourselves,” he said.

“If you look at it, it’s like normal already. Since that is how we want it to be, let’s just continue wearing our masks. That’s the most basic that we should do,” he added.

Until May 31, seven local government units in Negros Occidental have been placed under Alert Level 1 by the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases, while the rest of the province is still under Alert Level 2.

As of Thursday, there are only 12 active cases in Negros Occidental, based on the report of the Provincial Incident Management Team. (PNA)
