BUTUAN CITY – Authorities launched a massive manhunt against three inmates who staged a predawn escape Wednesday from the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) facility in the Surigao del Sur town of Cantilan.

Colonel Joseph Boquiren, Surigao del Sur Police Provincial Office (SDSPPO) director, said the Cantilan police was immediately directed to conduct an investigation and initiate a joint search effort with the BJMP.

“Though the BJMP, as a separate agency, has its investigation going on, the SDSPPO, through the local police office in Cantilan, is also looking into the incident,” Boquiren said in an interview  Wednesday.

While the circumstances of the inmates' escape have yet to be known, Boquiren identified them as Renwood Baya, Junmar Quezada, and Edgardo Pinoy Jr.

Baya was convicted by a regional court for carnapping, Quezada for robbery, and Pinoy for rape, authorities said.

“I alerted all the municipal and city police stations on the incident as we are working with the BJMP in the ongoing manhunt operation,” Boquiren said.

He said the inmates' background information, including photos, have been posted on social media to raise awareness among the residents for the recapture of the escapees. (PNA)
