MANILA – House of Representatives Deputy Speaker Loren Legarda on Friday stressed the need to give more teeth to effectively and efficiently implement landmark environmental laws to advance climate justice.
Legarda made the remark after the House adopted Resolution 2605, expressing the House’s sensibilities toward climate justice as it pushes for the strengthened implementation of the country's climate change and environmental sustainability laws.
"Sana po ay patuloy nating bigyan ng ngipin, (Hopefully we would continue adding more teeth) for the effective and efficient implementation, ang ating (of our) 10 landmark environmental laws, so we will be ensured a climate-resilient, sustainable, green, and regenerative economy that will be fair and just to all the vulnerable populations of our country," she said.
The resolution supported the establishment of an accountability mechanism for climate change and a specific Loss and Damage Fund.
It also called for an enabling policy environment to transition the country toward sustainability and climate resilience and strengthen the government’s actions in achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement.
Kabataan Party-list Rep. Sarah Elago lauded the adoption of the resolution as it is another step toward climate justice.
“This youth rep would just like to put on the record our utmost gratitude to various groups of climate action and climate justice advocates and eco-warriors who have tirelessly worked with and alongside us for the adoption of House Resolution 2605 and for the advancement of multiple legislative measures, which aim to urgently address the planetary emergency,” Elago said.
