DUMAGUETE CITY – The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) in Negros Oriental reported Friday that about 70 percent of the total population of the province has been registered in the government’s Philippine Identification System (PhilSys).

Chief of PSA-Negros Oriental, Ariel Fortuito, said with this accomplishment, they are hoping to reach in the months ahead a 100 percent registration of the province’s more than 1.4 million population with the help of the local government units and other sectors.

“We have already saturated many areas in the province and we hope to get the schools to assist us in the registration of their students, especially with the advent of the resumption of face-to-face classes,” he said.

As of May 24, PSA records show a total of 929,934 individuals in Negros Oriental registered in the national identification program, representing 64.89 percent of its total population of 1,432,990, based on the 2020 Census on Population and Housing, Fortuito said.

The estimate is at 70 percent, including these past days of registration.

However, the PSA is still collating data from the past week as reporting is weekly, he added.

This capital city has the highest number of registrants with 93,457 (or 69.69 percent of its 134,103 population); followed by Bayawan City, 79,449 (64.73 percent of 122,747); Guihulngan, 70,747 (68.92 percent of 102,656); Tanjay City, 58,898 (71.27 percent of 82,642); and Bais City, 54,287 (64.38 percent of 84,317).
