BUTUAN CITY – At least 45,020 indigents and coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19)-affected residents here are set to receive food subsidies from the local government this month, an official said Tuesday.

“This is already the third batch of food subsidy releases to our residents who are greatly affected by the pandemic,” Michiko de Jesus, the city information office chief, said.

De Jesus said the release of subsidies consisting of 10 kilos of rice and assorted groceries will continue until June 23.

She said more than 90,000 residents in the city directly benefited from the previous two releases of food subsidies in December last year and between March to April this year.

This month's subsidies have so far catered to at least 4,204 residents as beneficiaries.

“The order of Mayor Ronnie Vicente Lagnada to the city social welfare office is clear, and that is to continue the food subsidy while we are battling this pandemic,” De Jesus said.

Charlito Semine Awitin, a senior citizen from Barangay Datu Silongan, was among those who received his food subsidy on Monday.

“My wife and I rely on our daily needs from our small store. The subsidy is a big help to us because our income is deeply affected by the pandemic,” Awitin said. (PNA)
