DUMAGUETE CITY – Four local football players here have been selected to join the Philippine Team that is expected to compete in the Asian Football Federation (AFF) Under-16 Boys Championship 2022 in Indonesia.

The four members of the Football Kings United Dumaguete who were chosen are Francis Gabriel O. Maturan of Negros Oriental Montessori International School; John Mekhi L. Lagahit of Jose B. Cardenas Memorial High School in Canlaon City, Negros Oriental; and Aaron Nathan D. Dionaldo and Julio Antonio B. Yoldi of Silliman University in this capital city of Negros Oriental.

City Public Information Officer Catherine Aguilar, in an interview on Wednesday, said they were among 15 of 132 football players in the country who vied for slots in the Philippine Team during the tryouts.

The city was notified on Monday regarding the selection of the four local athletes, she said.

The boys will be joining the training camp of the Philippine Team although no specific details were not made available yet, she added.

The AFF U-16 Boys Championship 2022 will be held in Indonesia from July 21 to August 13, this year.

Football Kings United head coach Andy Mananquil expressed gratitude to his players, coaching staff Damian Nocete and Henry Craig Schmidt, Team Manager Richard C. Maturan, NOSIRFA (Negros Oriental-Siquijor Football Association) President Engr. Elmer M. Gallardo, Canlaon Hijos Football Club Coach Abundio A. Lagahit Jr. who is also the father of John Mekhi, Dumaguete City Mayor Felipe Antonio B. Remollo, the provincial government and all the sponsors for their continued support. (PNA)
