DUMAGUETE CITY – The province of Negros Oriental recorded eight new active cases of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) over the past few days, a health official here said Tuesday.

Assistant Provincial Health Officer Dr. Liland Estacion said the new cases were logged since her last report on June 16.

“Last Thursday I reported six active cases with some having recovered already, but now there are eight and I fear this might be the start of another surge as I believe there are many undocumented cases,” she said in mixed English and Cebuano.

Estacion said health authorities in the towns and cities are relentlessly undertaking contact tracing to prevent Covid-19 transmission, especially with the new Omicron sub-variants that could rapidly spread compared to the older variants.

She appealed to the people to submit themselves for documentation if they test positive for the virus.

She advised the “undocumented” self-tested positive cases to isolate themselves, properly manage their symptoms, seek doctor’s consult, and avoid exposure to other people to prevent transmission of the coronavirus.

Only those that have been tested through the reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) method at the province’s molecular laboratory are properly recorded while their contacts are traced, she noted.

Meanwhile, Estacion said they are waiting for the results of sample specimens sent to the Philippine Genome Center for testing of Covid-19 variants and sub-variants recently.

So far, the province has not logged a single variant or sub-variant positive case in the past weeks, she said. (PNA)
