BUTUAN CITY – The prime suspect in the killing of a father and the beheading of the latter's eight-month-old daughter in the Surigao del Norte town of Mainit has been arrested.

In a statement Wednesday, the Police Regional Office in the Caraga Region (PRO-13) said suspect Fred Avila Sequira was arrested at around 11:40 p.m. Tuesday in Barangay San Isidro, Sison, Surigao del Norte.

Sequira, 33, allegedly hacked to death his younger brother Johnny, 23, and beheaded his eight-month-old niece on Monday at their house in Barangay Matin-ao, Mainit.

Brig. Gen. Romeo Caramat Jr. said the arrest came after the police received information from residents about Sequira's whereabouts.

Caramat said the suspect confessed that he threw the head of his niece in a river in Barangay Cantugas.

Police have yet to determine the motive of the killing but Sequira is believed to be mentally ill. (PNA)
