LAOAG CITY – The Ilocos Norte government is introducing two new scholarship grants next school year as the Provincial Education Office (PEO) will soon start accepting student-applicants for law as well as Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) strand.

In the 2023 proposed budget, Carolyn Juan Agcaoili, education research assistant of the PEO, said Thursday that a total of PHP2.8 million has been allotted for eight Juris doctor scholars per year level.

The Juris doctor scholarship grant aims to assist those interested to take up law and help in the resolution of voluminous pending cases in court.

"A separate amount will also be allotted for the STEM strand scholars but the specific mechanics are still being finalized,” she said.

In the past two years, the provincial government has spent over PHP266 million for education, mostly spent on scholarship funds.

Ilocos Norte Governor Matthew Joseph Manotoc said in an earlier statement that under the intensified scholarship program, which is now available in eight categories, the provincial government will strengthen efforts to get back the years that learners lost due to the pandemic.

This came after the Sangguniang Panlalawigan approved the Integrated Provincial Scholarship Ordinance which aims to unify all the different scholarships offered by the Ilocos Norte government.

These scholarship grants can be availed by those who excel in academics, youth leaders, technical and vocational students, athletes, medical students, and senior high school students.

Last year, three more scholarship grants were added for students pursuing arts courses, including agriculture and fisheries, to ensure sustainable growth in the province. (PNA)
