BUTUAN CITY – Active coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases in the Caraga Region jumped to 117 after 102 new infections were recorded last week, the regional health office said Monday.

In a report, the Department of Health – Caraga (DOH-13) said the new infections raised the total number of cases in the region to 59,225 since the pandemic hit the country in March 2020.

The 102 new cases, logged from July 17 to 23, were recorded in Agusan del Norte with 10, Agusan del Sur, 16; Surigao del Sur, 12; and Surigao del Norte and Dinagat Islands with two each.

A total of 32 new cases were also recorded in Butuan City, seven in Cabadbaran City, six in Bayugan City, five in Surigao City, three in Bislig City, and one in Tandag City.

“A total of 66 new recoveries were also recorded last week in the region, bringing the total recoveries to 56,890,” the DOH-13 report said.

Covid-19-related deaths also rose to 2,218 as three new deaths were recorded in the area last week.

Continuing vaccination

As the number of infections slightly increased, the DOH-13 noted that vaccination remains one of the effective ways of protecting residents from the virus aside from the observance of minimum health protocols.

As of July 21, a total of 1,673,857 residents in the region are fully vaccinated, with 235,392 administered their booster shots.

At least 3.5 million Covid-19 vaccines were administered so far in the region. (PNA)
