DAVAO CITY—With barely a week left before the Kadayawan Festival, this city has recorded an increase of 141 new active coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases in the past 10 days.

In its weekly Covid-19 report released Monday, the city government said there are 510 active cases as of August 6, a spike from the 369 active cases recorded since July 30.

Of the new cases, 78 were found to be asymptomatic; 59 with mild symptoms; three, moderate; and one, critical.

There were two new fatalities, bringing the total number of deaths from Covid-19 here to 2,016.

Dr. Michelle Schlosser, the city’s Covid-19 task force spokesperson, said the number of cases has gone beyond what they were expecting as she urged the residents to get vaccinated.

"We can't afford that anymore. Our directives in Davao City, on behalf of the Davao City Covid-19 Task Force, are to maintain not just the good health of the community but also open the economy," Schlosser said in an interview.

Kadayawan Festival 2022 is touted as the first major event in the country to be held face-to-face since the pandemic was declared over two years ago. (PNA)
