MANILA – The Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene, popularly known as Quiapo Church, in Manila has a new rector.

Manila Archbishop Jose Cardinal Advincula has appointed Fr. Rufino “Jun” Sescon Jr. as the new head of the basilica.

Sescon will replace Monsignor Hernando Coronel, who is going to Yukon, Canada for missionary work. He served the post since 2015.

Sescon was the private secretary of the late former Manila archbishop Jaime Cardinal Sin. He is currently the chaplain of the Sto. Niño de Paz Chapel or Greenbelt Chapel in Makati City since 2005.

Advincula also named Fr. Jonathan Noel Mojica as Quiapo parochial vicar, while its former rector, Monsignor Jose Clemente Ignacio, was named as attached priest.

Another priest, Fr. Antonio Wang Yuhang was appointed as parochial vicar and vice-rector of the National Shrine of Saint Jude Thaddeus, which is located in San Miguel, Manila.

The new appointments were included in the circular dated Aug. 20 which was released only on Monday.

Earlier, Ignacio said the reshuffling of clergy assignments is scheduled for November. (PNA)
