COTABATO CITY – A public school teacher and her pastor-husband were killed in a road accident in Aleosan, North Cotabato, police said Tuesday.

In a report, the Aleosan police said the accident claimed the lives of George Gornez, a pastor, and his wife Remedios, a teacher of Nalapaan Elementary School in Pikit, North Cotabato.

It said the accident occurred at 4 p.m. Monday during a heavy downpour in Aleosan town.

Gornez and his wife were on their way home on a motorbike from Pikit when it rained, prompting them to park at a makeshift shelter near the highway in Barangay Pagangan.

A few minutes later, a white Toyota Hi-Lux, with plate number NGA 1696, plowed through the shelter and hit the couple.

In a radio interview Tuesday, resident Arthur Catalan said he and other villagers in the area were stunned by the incident.

“The couple pulled over to seek shelter in a makeshift structure beside the highway as the downpour started when a speeding pick-up truck overshoots from the road and hit them,” Catalan said in the vernacular. “They both died on the spot due to serious injuries.”

The identity of the female pick-up truck driver remains unknown as of this posting.

Also on Monday, a teacher in Carmen, North Cotabato was injured when his motorbike figured in a minor road accident while heading for school for the first day of classes. (PNA)
