DAVAO CITY – The city has logged 14 deaths related to coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) from Aug. 20-27, a health official here reported Tuesday.

Dr. Michelle Schlosser, the city’s Covid-19 task force spokesperson, said the newly-recorded fatalities brought the total Covid-19 deaths to 2,044.

Schlosser said the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) also saw an increase in its admission rate, but assured that it is still at the "safe level".

"There is a slight increase in patient admissions, though we have to clarify that the SPMC (Covid-19) patients are not all from Davao City," she said.

Schlosser said the city's positivity rate ranges between 13 and 15 percent, way more than the five percent acceptable rate set by the World Health Organization.

She reiterated that a person's best defense against the virus remains to be vaccination.

Schlosser said they are looking closely at the records, especially after the Kadayawan festivities this August that drew huge crowds.

Authorities are advising the public to remain vigilant and continue abiding with the minimum health protocols as the city observes the resumption of face-to-face classes and work.

Mayor Sebastian Duterte assured the city government is prepared for the anticipated surge of cases. (PNA)
