ZAMBOANGA CITY – The city government is constructing 10 more evacuation centers to provide shelters to victims of calamities and other disasters here.

Dr. Elmeir Jade Apolinario, City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) chief, said Monday the 10 facilities are in addition to the two completed evacuation centers in the clustered barangays of Vitali and Curuan.

“Each barangay should have an evacuation center, but due to budgetary constraints, we clustered the city’s 98 barangays into 12 cluster districts,” Apolinario said. “Each cluster district will have an evacuation center.”

Construction of three of the 10 centers are ongoing in Barangays Ayala, Pasonanca, and Talon-Talon.

The budget allocation for each evacuation center is PHP10 million, which will be equipped with an ambulance, firetruck, and a search and rescue team.

Apolinario said the evacuation center will be turned over to the host barangay once the formulation of the implementing rules and regulations is completed.

He hopes the construction would be completed by 2024. (PNA)
