DUMAGUETE CITY – Rescuers on Monday recovered the lifeless body of a woman who went missing during a flash flood Sunday evening at a river at Barangay Bago in Tayasan town, Negros Oriental province.

A report from the Negros Oriental Provincial Police Office (NOPPO) identified the woman as Maribel Mariano Esteban, 43, a widow, and resident of Barangay Tiki, Himamaylan town in Negros Occidental.

Esteban was carried away by floodwaters caused by heavy rainfall associated with Super Typhoon Karding and the southwest monsoon around 6 p.m. while crossing the Panayawan River in Barangay Bago.

Her two daughters managed to cross the river safely on their way home from the Bago National High School.

The town’s disaster risk reduction and management office conducted a search-and-retrieval operation soon after and found the woman’s body downstream.

Meanwhile, a landslide was reported in Barangay Linao of the same town although no one was hurt, the police said.

Classes in all levels were suspended in Tayasan as ordered by Mayor Susano Ruperto III.

Other municipalities with class suspensions from kindergarten to high school, as declared by the local government units, included Santa Catalina, Zamboanguita, Mabinay, Amlan, and Bindoy. (PNA)
