CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga – The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed the construction of a flood mitigation structure in Tarlac province to ensure the safety and protection of residents during the rainy season.

With a total cost of PHP94.5 million, the DPWH finished the 557.20-meter flood mitigation structure along the Barangay Sta. Lucia section of Bangot River in Capas town in time for this rainy season.

Tarlac 2nd District Engr. Edward Ricardo Ramos said on Friday the concrete structure was built on the right bank of the waterway to protect residential communities and agricultural lands from flooding.

“This flood mitigation structure will keep residents safe and allow the continuity of all economic and social activities even during the rainy season,” Ramos said in a statement.

He said the newly constructed flood-control structure is connected to the existing concrete river walls that serve as the community's first line of protection during calamities and help prevent the possible overflow of the Bangot River.

“Tarlac’s 3rd district is surrounded by major rivers and it is our mandate to protect residents from the adverse effects of flooding through engineering interventions such as the construction of flood mitigation structures,” Ramos said.

He added that their agency is also set to complete the rehabilitation of an existing dike along the O'Donnell River, also in Capas town.

The project involves the restoration of a 282.80-meter river wall on the right bank of the Sta. Lucia section of the major waterway that was damaged by recent typhoons.

“Now that we are in the rainy season, the district office is doing everything to finish this project on time for this will ensure the safety of those residing in the riverside areas,” Ramos said.

The single slope dike with a height of three meters is scheduled to be completed in October this year and was implemented under the department's regular infrastructure program with funds sourced from the 2022 General Appropriations Act. (PNA)
