ZAMBOANGA CITY – Authorities served a warrant of arrest against a mid-level leader of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) detained for kidnappings and bombings in Sulu, a police official said Monday.

Col. John Francis Encinareal, Criminal Investigation and Detection Group–Zamboanga Peninsula director, said the warrant of arrest for kidnapping and serious illegal detention was served Saturday against Abubakar Abdulkadil, 35, a key member of the ASG in Sulu.

Encinareal said the court of Jolo, Sulu did not recommend bail in its warrant dated March 17, 2020.

Abdulkadil is detained at the Sulu provincial jail in Patikul town for kidnapping, homicide, and murder.

Police authorities arrested Abdulkadil on Sept. 7 at his hideout in Barangay San Raymundo, Jolo, Sulu.

The police said the Patikul-based Abdulkadil was involved in the series of kidnapping of Filipinos and foreigners and bombings.

He was also tagged in the 2019 bombing of the Jolo Cathedral, and in the Aug. 24, 2020 twin bombings in the same town.

Abdulkadil is one of the students of ASG sub-leader Mudzrimar Sawadjaan in making improvised explosive devices and explosive vests, authorities said. (PNA)
