CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga – Around 1.4 million residents in Central Luzon lived below the poverty threshold in 2021, the Philippine Statistics Authority-Regional Statistical Services 3 (PSA RSSO 3) said.

The figure was based on the preliminary results of the Family Income and Expenditure Survey (FIES) conducted by the agency last year.

In her report, Arlene M. Divino, regional director of the PSA RSSO 3, said the poverty incidence among the population in Central Luzon whose per capita income cannot sufficiently meet the individual basic food and non-food needs was estimated at 11.4 percent.

“This translates to around 1.4 million Filipinos in Central Luzon who lived below the poverty threshold,” Divino said.

The report also showed that among families in Central Luzon, 8.3 percent were considered poor which equates to around 248,000.

The poverty threshold in Central Luzon was estimated at PHPP13,160 for a family of five in 2021.

On average, per month, an individual in Central Luzon needed at least PHP2,632 to meet his/her basic food and non-food needs.

Likewise, the subsistence incidence among residents in Central Luzon, or the proportion of residents whose income is not enough to meet even just the basic food needs was registered at 2.6 percent or about 321,000.

It was estimated that a family of five needed at least PHP9,392 per month to meet their basic food requirements. (PNA)
