MANILA – Filipinos in Italy are advised to closely monitor local news as the Italian government issued warnings following the Sunday eruption of Mt. Stromboli.

The Philippine Embassy in Italy on Friday said Italian civil protection authorities had raised the alert level from yellow to orange as the "situation of enhanced volcano imbalance persists."

"While the Italian Department of Civil Protection indicated that monitoring parameters are 'normal with a persistent activity of the Strombolian type and ordinary intensity', all Filipinos in the affected areas and nearby areas are advised to continuously monitor the news," it said in a statement.

In case of emergency, Filipinos in Italy are urged to contact the Embassy at (+39) 334 658 2118, the Philippine Consulate in Reggio Calabria at (39) 651 870 750, or the Italian national emergency hotline at 112.

Stromboli Volcano, one of the most active volcanoes on earth, erupted on Sunday morning local time, releasing huge plumes of smoke and a lava flow pouring into the sea.

Local reports, citing the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, said a first major explosion was recorded on Sept. 29. No casualties were reported in the latest eruption. (PNA)
